"Loyalty" Diary
by Mungus

Well things are now just about wrapped, 16 days shooting in all so far and one long location day to go, starting with some club scenes, then a drive to the Sunshine Coast to grab a sound bite and finishing back in Brisbane with an outdoor night shoot of several street scenes.

Looking back it is interesting observing what people perceive working on a film to be, one thing became very apparent is that many of the younger generation have no stamina, they could handle a couple of hours work, then had to collapse and recuperate for a couple of hours, thinking this was how things happen. The reality that a shoot day could be 12 hrs straight or more seemed totally alien.

Probably the most challenging work was the fight scenes, which are brutal. the overall approach was to let them flow initially so see how the actors had correographed, break them down into overall sections to shoot, then repeat for the close ups and cut aways. To speed the process up most was done hand held, keeping the camera moving around the action, which produced some very interesting and unusual images. Once cut, this process should keep the audience suitable unballanced to the point where they won't know what is coming next and where from.

Normally these fights would be shot over 2-3 days, but using this roving techneaque, we managed to shoot each fight within a single day, including makeup build, still had the usual make up continuity high jinks for follow on scenes.

It's been interesting watching the actors and seeing how they developed the parts they were playing. Ozzie Deverish would have to be the standout and his character bacame more and more disturbing as the shoot progressed. His performance has been absolutely outstanding, and that is not taking anything away from Whitney Duff and Christian Radford who have also produced superb performances.

One gets so wound up and involved in the intensity, that once the major part is wrapped I find myself feeling a bit lost and it takes a while to get back into the groove of normal life, one is hanging out for the next production to start.

Hopefully the Director will have a trailer cut over the next few weeks and I can get it up for all to see.

LOL! Hungry filmmakers are especially dangerous! ...I wouldn't want to manage the catering on that gig. Interestingly, the catering budget for a day on a big budget production like this is probably equivalent to the average total budget of a local independent film. Food for thought (pun intended).

Yes, I think there is a bit too much 'Red Carpet' and 'Stars in the Eyes' associated with films, and many don't realise the considerable amount of plain bloody hard work that goes on behing the scenes to make the end result what it is.

An example of this is currently happening at Warners Studios, 2-3 months and 250 people involved with pre-preproduction for Narnia, spread over sonething like 8 sound stages. Imagine keeping all that lot fed!

Hey Hugh,

This is great! Thanks for sharing. You have the true film making spirit, no sooner have you finished one project and you are eager to start on the next.

Excellent point about stamina. One thing that people generally underestimate is the amount of physical work and hours that are involved in putting together a film, whether it be short form or long form. Working 14-16 hour days can often be the norm rather than the exception on low budget, highly demanding projects.

Please keep us informed on this project and future projects!
